When To See A Vet For Limping

September 12, 2026 · 4 min read

A limp is a symptom. Some causes are urgent.

See a vet promptly if

The limp is sudden, your dog will not put weight on the leg, the joint is swollen or hot, your dog yelps, or there was a fall or injury.

Also see a vet if

A mild limp lasts more than a day or two, keeps coming back, or your dog is also tired or off food.

Why diagnosis matters

Arthritis, ligament tears, hip or elbow problems and other conditions need different care.

Never use human pain relievers

Ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen can harm dogs. Only give medicine a vet prescribes.

Supplements

A supplement does not replace a diagnosis. See how to choose dog supplements.
